Symphony No. 1, Op. 42 - Alexandre Guilmant (1837–1911)

French organist Alexandre Guilmant was the celebrity organist for the St. Louis 1904 World's Fair at the invitation of his student Charles Galloway. Galloway was the organist of St. Peter's at the time.

Galloway had studied with Guilmant in Paris, and the two had evidently developed a close friendship. Two years prior to coming to the World's Fair, Guilmant completed his Seventh Organ Sonata which he dedicated to Galloway.

Symphony No. 1 is written for organ and orchestra. The organ plays a prominent role, and a better title might be "Concerto." This same music exists in a version for solo organ as "Sonata No. 1" and shares the same opus number.

A nearly two-year-old Margaret visits the grave of her father's predecessor in Bellefontaine Cemetary.
